January 25. 2010. GKI sentiment index
In industry big firms expect an increase in production
GKI's economic sentiment index adjusted for seasonal effects started the year with a slight increase. Expectations are significantly less pessimistic than a year before or in October 2008 but they still couldn't reach the value of September 2008, the last "calm" month before the crisis. In January, according to the survey conducted by GKI Economic Research Co. (www.gki.hu) with the support of the European Union, expectations of both businesses and consumers have continued its remarkable improvement that started last May.
As far as the business sphere is concerned expectations improved in industry and construction, they remained unchanged in services and deteriorated in trade. In industry the confidence index continued its increase that started last spring but it still remained on the negative side. The evaluation of the production of the past three months deteriorated, but the anticipation of the next three months improved. Furthermore, the number of firms that expect an increase in production has exceeded that of those reckoning with a drop for the first time since July 2008. In relation with this, bigger firms were more optimistic, whereas smaller ones more pessimistic. The assessment of the stock of orders among them that of exports, too, improved, whereas the stocks of own production were considered smaller by the respondents. In construction the confidence index continued to increase slightly just as in December. The assessment of production concerning the past three months deteriorated, opinions on the stock of orders practically remained unchanged but expectations on employment for the next three months turned better. The confidence index of trade has fluctuated significantly, although it has had a growing trend for three quarters, but in January it decreased somewhat. The assessment of expected orders and sales positions dropped and stocks that were considered to be very low earlier increased as well. After the improvement that had taken place between July and October the confidence index of services dropped in the last two months of 2009 and it remained unchanged m-o-m in January 2010. Employment deteriorated notably in January, whereas the assessment of the state of business in the past and the opinions on the turnover for the next three months improved slightly.
The number of those expecting a decrease of prices dropped in all sectors, meanwhile households' inflationary expectations also picked up. Intentions to employ were up in industry and construction, whereas they decreased in trade and services. The prospects of the Hungarian economy deteriorated in industry and construction and it improved in trade and services.
After the slight decrease in November the confidence index of consumers increased in the last two months. In January, fear from unemployment picked up notably, whereas the assessment of consumers' own financial position and short-term saving capacity improved slightly compared to December.
Explanation to the methodology:
In line with the methodology used by the EU, GKI surveys the expectations of industry, trade, construction and services in the calculation of its business confidence index. (As far as services are concerned, similarly to the practice of the EU, companies of the financial and public sectors have not been included in the surveys yet.) GKI publishes seasonally adjusted data by using appropriate mathematical methods to filter out the discrepancies caused by seasonal effects (e.g. differences in weather conditions between winter and summer, increased demand before Christmas, lower output because of summer vacations).
The consumer confidence index is calculated from responses given to questions concerning the actual and the expected financial position of households, the actual and the expected economic situation of the country, and the purchase of higher value consumer durables.
The business confidence index is calculated from the responses of enterprises in industry, trade, construction and services given to questions concerning the state of business and expectations. The history of the subindex that reflects the expectations of services is shorter than that of other sectors. This kind of surveys started in 1998. Therefore the business confidence index for 1996-1997 had to be recalculated. This was made by using the mathematical correlation among the confidence indices of various sectors in the period after 1998.
The GKI economic confidence index is the weighted average of the consumer confidence index and the business confidence index.
